Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce – The Timeless 1850s Favorite for Lightning-Fast Growth and Sweet, Crisp Leaves

Shop the highest quality Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce seeds for the ultimate garden-fresh salad. First introduced in the mid-1800s, Black Seeded Simpson has remained one of the most popular leaf lettuces in the world for over 150 years. It is the "Big Kahuna" of early-season greens, prized for its incredibly fast growth and its large, light-green, crumpled leaves. At The Seed Guy, we recommend this heirloom for the impatient gardener because it can be harvested as "baby greens" in as little as three weeks, providing a quick victory in the early spring garden.

In the garden, Black Seeded Simpson is remarkably dependable. While many lettuces bolt and turn bitter the moment the sun gets hot, this variety is surprisingly heat-tolerant, staying sweet and tender longer than most other loose-leaf types. It is a fantastic companion plant for carrots, radishes, and cucumbers, and its light-catching, frilly leaves make it a beautiful addition to garden borders. Because it doesn't form a tight head, you can simply snip off what you need for a sandwich or salad and the plant will keep on growing. At The Seed Guy, our seeds are tested for elite germination and rapid vigor, ensuring you get the freshest, crispest salads of your life.

Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce Planting Instructions:

1. When to Plant: Lettuce is a cool-season crop. Sow seeds as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring. For a continuous harvest, sow a new batch of seeds every 2 weeks until the heat of mid-summer. Sow again in late summer for a fall crop.

2. Preparation: Lettuce prefers loose, well-drained soil rich in nitrogen. Work in a little compost before planting. Lettuce seeds are very small and need light to germinate, so do not bury them too deeply.

3. Sowing: Sow seeds very thinly on the soil surface and lightly dust with 1/8 inch of fine soil or vermiculite. Space rows 12 inches apart. Keep the soil surface moist with a fine mist until the sprouts appear.

4. Thinning and Care: Once seedlings are 2 inches tall, thin them to 6-10 inches apart. Lettuce has a shallow root system and requires frequent, light watering to keep the leaves crisp and prevent wilting. Mulching can help keep the roots cool as the weather warms.

5. Pests and Diseases: Slugs and snails are the most common lettuce lovers. Use organic barriers or traps if they become a problem. To prevent bitterness and tip-burn, ensure the plants have adequate moisture and consider providing afternoon shade during the hottest part of the summer.
