Country Gentleman Corn – The Legendary White Shoe-Peg Heirloom with Unmatched Sweetness and Milky Flavor

Shop the highest quality Country Gentleman Corn seeds for a delicious and historic garden harvest. First introduced in 1890, Country Gentleman remains one of the most famous white sweet corns in American history. This variety is famously known as a "shoe-peg" corn because the kernels are long, slender, and arranged in a beautiful, irregular pattern rather than straight rows. At The Seed Guy, we recommend this heirloom for the home gardener because it stays tender and "milky" longer than most other varieties. When you bite into an ear of Country Gentleman, you are experiencing the deep, creamy sweetness that made heirloom corn a staple on dinner tables over a century ago.

In the garden, Country Gentleman is a vigorous grower, typically producing stalks that reach 7 to 8 feet in height. Each stalk often yields two ears, making it a highly productive choice for those looking to stock their pantry. Because the kernels are so deep and slender, this variety is the "Big Kahuna" for canning and freezing, as it provides a much higher yield of corn per ear than standard varieties. It is an excellent companion plant for beans and squash—the classic "Three Sisters" method—where the corn provides the structure for beans to climb. At The Seed Guy, our seeds are tested for elite germination and high-yielding performance, ensuring you enjoy the heavy-duty production and gourmet flavor of this timeless American classic.

Country Gentleman Corn Planting Instructions:

1. When to Plant: Corn is a warm-weather crop that is very sensitive to frost. Sow seeds directly into the garden only after the soil has warmed to at least 65°F. For the best results, wait until about 2 weeks after the last spring frost.

2. Preparation: Corn is a "heavy feeder" and requires very fertile soil. Incorporate plenty of nitrogen-rich compost or aged manure into the soil before planting. Corn also requires a lot of space and full sun to thrive and produce sweet, full ears.

3. Sowing: For proper pollination, corn should always be planted in "blocks" rather than a single long row. Sow seeds 1 inch deep and 8-12 inches apart in rows spaced 30-36 inches apart. Aim for a block of at least 4 rows to ensure the wind can effectively pollinate the silks.

4. Thinning and Care: Once seedlings are 3-4 inches tall, thin them to ensure proper spacing. Corn has shallow roots and requires consistent moisture, especially during the silking and tasseling stages. Mulching can help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds that compete for nutrients.

5. Pests and Diseases: Corn earworms are the most common challenge for sweet corn. You can apply a drop of mineral oil to the silks once they have withered to deter them. To prevent fungal issues like corn smut, ensure your corn is planted in a different location each year and avoid overhead watering that keeps the tassels wet.
