Red Russian Kale – The Ultra-Tender Heirloom Beauty with Vibrant Purple Stems and Sweet Cold-Weather Flavor

Shop the highest quality Red Russian Kale seeds for a stunning and nutrient-packed garden harvest. Originally brought to Canada by Russian traders in the 19th century, Red Russian is the "Big Kahuna" of the kale world when it comes to texture and beauty. Unlike the curly varieties found in grocery stores, this heirloom features flat, deeply lobed "oak-like" leaves with striking purple-red veins and stems. At The Seed Guy, we recommend this variety for the home gardener because it is significantly more tender and sweet, making it the perfect choice for fresh salads and smoothies without the toughness associated with other kales.

In the garden, Red Russian is a champion of resilience. While it grows beautifully in the spring and summer, it truly enters its prime when the temperature drops. A light frost triggers the plant to convert its starches into sugars, making the leaves incredibly sweet and flavorful. It is a fantastic companion plant for beets, celery, and onions, and its colorful appearance makes it a standout in both traditional vegetable rows and ornamental edible landscapes. Because it is a "cut-and-come-again" crop, you can harvest the outer leaves all season long for a continuous supply of Vitamins A, C, and K. At The Seed Guy, our seeds are tested for elite germination and vibrant color, ensuring your winter garden is as healthy as it is beautiful.

Red Russian Kale Planting Instructions:

1. When to Plant: Kale is a cool-season crop. Sow seeds directly into the garden 4-6 weeks before the last spring frost. For a fall harvest, which often produces the best flavor, sow seeds in late summer about 6-8 weeks before the first expected frost.

2. Preparation: Kale thrives in fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Work in a good amount of compost before planting. Aim for a soil pH between 6.0 and 7.5 to ensure the plant can access the nutrients it needs to produce its vibrant colors.

3. Sowing: Sow seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. Space seeds about 1 inch apart in rows 18-24 inches apart. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination. Red Russian is a fast grower and will sprout quickly in cool, damp soil.

4. Thinning and Care: Once seedlings are 3-4 inches tall, thin them to 12 inches apart. Use the thinning's as delicious "baby kale" for salads! Provide at least 1-1.5 inches of water per week. Mulching around the base will help keep the roots cool and retain moisture during warmer spells.

5. Pests and Diseases: Watch for cabbage worms and aphids. Check the undersides of the leaves regularly or use a light row cover for protection. To prevent disease, practice crop rotation and avoid planting kale in the same spot where other brassicas (cabbage, broccoli) grew the previous year.
