Red Burgundy Onion – The "Tried and True" Short-Day Favorite for Sweet, Mild Slices and Rich Crimson Color

Shop the highest quality Red Burgundy Onion seeds for a delicious and colorful harvest. When it comes to the perfect "hamburger onion," Red Burgundy is the "Big Kahuna." This classic heirloom is famous for its smooth, dark-red skin and its crisp, white flesh decorated with beautiful pinkish-red rings. At The Seed Guy, we recommend this variety because it is exceptionally mild and sweet, making it the premier choice for fresh eating in salads, sandwiches, and salsas without the harsh "bite" of other onions.

In the garden, Red Burgundy is a reliable "short-day" variety, meaning it is specifically designed to bulb when days are shorter, making it a superstar for Southern gardeners and those in milder climates. It is a fantastic companion plant for cabbage, beets, and lettuce, often helping to deter pests from its neighbors. While it is best enjoyed fresh, it can be stored for several weeks after harvest. At The Seed Guy, our seeds are tested for elite germination and uniform bulbing, ensuring you get heavy yields of beautiful, 3-to-4-inch gourmet onions.

Red Burgundy Onion Planting Instructions:

1. When to Plant: In the South, plant in fall for a spring harvest. In the North, start indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost and transplant out as soon as the soil can be worked.

2. Preparation: Onions are "heavy feeders." Work in plenty of compost or aged manure. They require loose, well-draining soil to allow the bulbs to expand.

3. Sowing: Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep. If starting in flats, keep them in a cool, bright area. When transplanting, do not bury the base too deep.

4. Care: Onions have shallow roots and do not like competition. Keep the bed meticulously weeded. Water regularly to ensure the soil stays moist but never soggy.

5. Pests and Diseases: Onion Thrips are the most common pest; they hide in the leaf folds. To prevent "downy mildew" and "purple blotch," ensure good spacing for airflow and avoid watering the tops of the plants in the evening.
