Sweet Spanish Onion – The "Tried and True" Jumbo Heirloom for Massive, Mild Bulbs and Crisp Gourmet Slices

Shop the highest quality Sweet Spanish Onion seeds for a high-yielding garden harvest. When it comes to size and sweetness, you just can't beat Sweet Spanish (often called Yellow Utah). This heirloom is legendary for producing enormous, globe-shaped bulbs that can easily reach a pound or more. At The Seed Guy, we recommend this variety because it offers a wonderfully mild and juicy flavor that lacks the pungent "burn" of smaller onions. It is the premier choice for steak toppings, thick onion rings, and fresh summer salads.

In the garden, Sweet Spanish is a "long-day" to "intermediate-day" performer, making it an excellent choice for Northern and central gardeners. It is a fantastic companion plant for strawberries, tomatoes, and lettuce, helping to naturally deter garden pests with its aroma. These onions are vigorous growers and have a surprisingly good storage life for a sweet variety, keeping for several months if cured properly. At The Seed Guy, our seeds are tested for elite germination and uniform sizing, ensuring you harvest a crop of professional-grade, jumbo onions.

Sweet Spanish Onion Planting Instructions:

1. When to Plant: Start seeds indoors 8-12 weeks before the last frost. In milder climates, they can be sown outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked.

2. Preparation: Onions need loose, well-drained soil rich in nitrogen. Incorporate plenty of organic matter or aged compost into the bed before planting.

3. Sowing: Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in flats. Keep the soil moist and provide plenty of light. When seedlings reach 5 inches tall, trim the tops to 3 inches to encourage strong root development.

4. Care: Onions have shallow roots and hate competing with weeds. Keep the bed clean and water consistently—at least 1 inch per week. As the bulbs begin to "shoulder" out of the ground, do not cover them with soil.

5. Pests and Diseases: Keep an eye out for Onion Maggots. Planting radishes nearby can act as a trap crop. To prevent neck rot during storage, ensure the onions are fully cured in a dry, shaded area with good airflow for 2-3 weeks after harvest.
