Siberian Kale – The Rugged High-Yielding Powerhouse for Massive Harvests and Unbeatable Frost Resistance

Shop the highest quality Siberian Kale seeds for a reliable and bountiful garden experience. If you are looking for the most productive kale on the planet, Siberian Kale is the undisputed "Big Kahuna." This heirloom variety is famous for its massive, frilly, blue-green leaves and its ability to keep producing long after other greens have frozen solid. At The Seed Guy, we recommend this variety for the self-sufficient gardener because it produces a much higher volume of food per plant than almost any other leafy green, providing a steady supply of nutrition through the leanest months of the year.

In the garden, Siberian Kale is a fast-growing, vigorous plant that easily reaches 2 feet in height and width. While most kales have a somewhat bitter bite, the Siberian variety is known for its mild, almost buttery flavor and tender texture. It is a fantastic companion plant for aromatic herbs like dill and rosemary, which help deter common garden pests. Because it is so cold-hardy, it can often be harvested from under the snow in many climates, making it a vital crop for year-round food security. At The Seed Guy, our seeds are tested for elite germination and rugged growth, ensuring you get the heavy-duty yields this legendary winter green is famous for.

Siberian Kale Planting Instructions:

1. When to Plant: Siberian Kale can be sown in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. However, it is most famous as a fall and winter crop. Sow seeds in late summer to allow the plants to reach maturity just as the cold weather sets in.

2. Preparation: This variety prefers rich, moist soil with a high organic content. Work in aged manure or compost to a depth of 6-8 inches. Siberian Kale is a vigorous grower and needs plenty of nutrients to support its large leaf production.

3. Sowing: Sow seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. If planting in rows, space the rows 2 feet apart to allow for the plant's wide spreading habit. Keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings emerge.

4. Thinning and Care: Once seedlings are 3 inches tall, thin them to 12-18 inches apart. This extra space is crucial for Siberian Kale, as the plants can become quite large. Provide consistent water—about 1 inch per week—and mulch heavily to protect the roots if you plan to harvest throughout the winter.

5. Pests and Diseases: While Siberian Kale is very hardy, it can still be visited by cabbage loopers. Inspect the large, ruffled leaves frequently. To maintain soil health and prevent disease, ensure you rotate your kale crops every season.
