Red Romaine Lettuce – The Majestic Crimson Heirloom for Crisp Gourmet Salads and Striking Garden Color

Shop the highest quality Red Romaine Lettuce seeds for a garden that looks as good as it tastes. If you love the crunch of a classic Caesar salad but want a massive upgrade in color and nutrition, Red Romaine is the "The Choice." Also known as "Cimmaron," this heirloom dates back to the 1700s and is famous for its tall, upright heads and stunning bronze-red leaves that fade into a crisp, apple-green heart. At The Seed Guy, we recommend this variety because it offers a much more complex, sweet flavor than standard store-bought romaine, and it stays crisp even after being dressed in a heavy vinaigrette.

In the garden, Red Romaine is a standout performer. It is significantly more heat-tolerant than most other romaine varieties, making it a reliable choice for gardeners in warmer climates. It is a fantastic companion plant for strawberries and garlic, and its vertical growth habit makes it an excellent choice for tight spaces or raised beds. Whether you are harvesting "baby greens" for a colorful spring mix or waiting for the full, upright head to mature, this lettuce provides a high-yield, nutrient-dense harvest. At The Seed Guy, our seeds are tested for elite germination and deep color intensity, ensuring your salad bowl is always a work of art.

Red Romaine Lettuce Planting Instructions:

1. When to Plant: Romaine likes cool weather. Sow seeds 4 weeks before the last frost in spring. For a fall harvest, sow 6-8 weeks before the first expected frost.

2. Preparation: Lettuce needs nitrogen-rich soil. Work in plenty of compost or aged manure. Ensure the soil is loose so the shallow roots can spread easily.

3. Sowing: Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep. Lettuce seeds need a small amount of light to trigger germination, so do not bury them deep. Keep the soil surface moist with a gentle misting.

4. Thinning and Care: Once seedlings are 3 inches tall, thin them to 10-12 inches apart to allow the upright heads to form. Romaine requires consistent moisture; if the soil dries out too much, the leaves can become tough or bitter.

5. Pests and Diseases: Red Romaine is generally hardy, but keep an eye out for aphids that might hide in the tall leaves. It can also be susceptible to "downy mildew" if the leaves stay wet overnight. To prevent this, always water at the base of the plant early in the morning.
