Gourmet Leaf Lettuce Blend Planting Instructions:
1. When to Plant: Lettuce thrives in the cool temperatures of spring and fall. Sow seeds as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring. For a continuous supply of gourmet greens, sow a new section every 10-14 days.
2. Preparation: This blend loves loose, fertile soil. Work in a layer of aged compost to give the different varieties the nitrogen they need for rapid leaf growth. Because lettuce seeds are tiny and need light to germinate, do not bury them deep!
3. Sowing: Scatter the seeds thinly over the soil surface (aim for about 4-6 seeds per inch) and very lightly dust with 1/8 inch of fine soil. Keep the bed moist with a gentle mist so you don't wash the seeds away.
4. Thinning and Care: For "baby greens," you don't need to thin much. If you want larger individual plants, thin to 6 inches apart. Lettuce has shallow roots, so consistent, light watering is the secret to keeping the leaves sweet and preventing bitterness.
5. Pests and Diseases: Keep an eye out for slugs. Since this is a dense blend, ensure you harvest regularly to allow for good airflow between the different leaf types. Harvest in the cool of the morning for the crispest leaves!
