(8) Variety Grain Heirloom Seed Package Planting Instructions:
1. Preparation:Â Choose a site with full sun and well-draining soil. Grains prefer a clean seedbed, so remove any weeds or large rocks. For small-scale homesteading, a simple tilled plot or raised bed works well for these varieties.
2. Sowing:Â Most grains can be broadcast (scattered evenly) or planted in shallow rows. For wheat and oats, a planting depth of 1-1.5 inches is ideal. For smaller seeds like Amaranth or Quinoa, a very shallow depth of 1/4 inch is best. Ensure good seed-to-soil contact by lightly tamping the area down.
3. Care:Â Grains are remarkably hardy but need consistent moisture during the germination and early growth phases. Once established, most of these varieties are moderately drought-tolerant. Keep the area as weed-free as possible while the grains are young so they don't have to compete for nutrients.
4. Harvesting: Harvest when the grain heads have dried on the stalk and the kernels feel hard. You can test this by biting a kernel—if it’s hard and "cracks," it’s ready. For small harvests, use hand sickles or shears to cut the stalks, then thresh and winnow to separate the grain from the chaff.
5. Pests & Disease: Keep an eye out for birds as the grain matures. Using bird netting or shiny "flash tape" can help protect your crop. Ensure good air circulation between rows to prevent fungal issues in humid climates.
