Sugar Snap Pea – The "Grandaddy of All Snap Peas" for Juicy, Thick-Walled Gourmet Pods

Shop the highest quality Sugar Snap Pea seeds for the variety that started the snap pea revolution. When it comes to flavor that sets the bar, Sugar Snap is the "All-Time Legend." This classic heirloom changed gardening forever by offering thick, juicy, edible pods that stay sweet even as the peas inside get big and round. At The Seed Guy, we recommend this variety because it provides the ultimate garden snack—a pod that is so sweet and succulent, it's often called "the candy of the garden."

In the garden, the original Sugar Snap is a vigorous climber, with vines that can reach 6 feet or more! This means it is a "vertical superstar," making it perfect for fences, tall trellises, or garden arches. It is a fantastic companion plant for corn and sunflowers, which can act as a natural trellis for the peas to climb. At The Seed Guy, our seeds are tested for elite germination and vigorous growth, ensuring you get a tall, lush wall of green that produces heavy yields of gourmet pods from the bottom to the top for weeks on end.

Sugar Snap Pea Planting Instructions:

1. When to Plant: Plant as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring. Sugar Snap loves the cool weather of spring and early summer. In many climates, you can also do a fall planting 8-10 weeks before the first frost.

2. Preparation: Because these vines get tall, you MUST have your trellis or fence in place before you plant. Trying to install a trellis after the peas have sprouted can damage their delicate shallow roots. Ensure the soil is loose and well-draining.

3. Sowing: Sow seeds 1 inch deep and space them 2 inches apart along the base of your trellis. A 24-hour soak in water before planting is highly recommended for these larger seeds to ensure even and fast germination.

4. Care: These are climbers! Once they reach 4 inches tall, gently guide the first "tendrils" toward your trellis. They will take it from there. Mulch the base of the plants to keep the roots cool as the summer sun starts to warm the soil.

5. Pests and Diseases: Watch for Powdery Mildew if the weather gets humid. To prevent this, ensure good air circulation through your trellis and avoid wetting the foliage when watering. Pick pods regularly to encourage the vine to keep flowering.
