🌱 Mary Washington Asparagus Seed Planting Instructions

1. Start Indoors (Recommended):

Begin seeds indoors 12-14 weeks before your last frost date.
You can speed germination by soaking seeds in warm water for 12-24 hours before planting.
Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep in seed trays or pots filled with a light, well-draining seed starting mix.
Keep soil moist and warm (70-75°F) until seedlings emerge (usually 2-3 weeks).

2. Transplanting Outdoors:

Harden off seedlings once the danger of frost has passed, when they are approximately 10-12 weeks old.
Make sure to choose a location with well-drained, fertile soil and a sunny location.
Asparagus thrives in raised beds or loose loam enriched with compost or aged manure.

3. Planting in Rows:

Dig trenches about 6-8 inches deep and 12 inches wide.
Space seedlings (or crowns if transplanting later) 12-18 inches apart in rows 3-4 fee apart.
Cover with 2 inches of soil, then gradually fill in the trench as plants grow through the season.

4. Care & Maintenance:

Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Mulch to suppress weeds and retain moisture.
Fertilize with a balanced organic fertilizer in spring and after harvest.

5. Harvesting:

Asparagus requires patience, so do not harvest spears in the first 2 years - allow the plants to establish strong roots.
Light harvesting can begin in year 3, with full harvests starting in year 4.
Cut spears at ground level when they are 6-8 inches tall.

6. Longevity:

With proper care, Mary Washington asparagus will produce delicious harvests for 15-20 years.
