The King Of The Perennial Garden: A Legacy Of Flavor

data-path-to-node="5" />

If you are looking to build a truly permanent food source, Mary Washington Asparagus is the ultimate investment for your homestead. At The Seed Guy, we believe in planting for the future, and this heirloom variety is the undisputed "King of the Garden." Unlike annual crops that you have to replant every spring, a well-tended asparagus bed is a legacy crop that will reward you with succulent, tender spears for 20 years or more. These spears are flavor-kissed by sunshine and offer a crisp, buttery sweetness that you simply cannot find in a grocery store. When you grow your own, you are stepping away from the "tough and woody" store-bought stalks and stepping into gourmet self-reliance.

This variety has been the gold standard for American gardeners for over a century, specifically prized for its uniform growth and incredible resistance to rust. Mary Washington allows you to "get your perennial on" by establishing a deep-rooted foundation that provides one of the very first harvests of the spring season. Rich in fiber, vitamins, and essential minerals, these spears are as healthy as they are delicious. Whether you’re sautéing them in a cast-iron skillet or enjoying them fresh from the garden, our Mary Washington Asparagus seeds are a must-have staple for any gardener who values long-term food security and world-class flavor.

Mary Washington Asparagus Planting Instructions:

1. Starting the Seeds: Asparagus seeds have a tough outer shell. Soak them in warm water for 24 hours before planting. Start indoors in deep pots 8-10 weeks before the last frost to give roots room to grow.

2. The Nursery Bed: For the first year, grow your seedlings in a "nursery bed" with rich, loose soil. This allows the small plants to develop strong "crowns" without being crowded by weeds or other garden plants.

3. Permanent Placement: In the second year, transplant your crowns to their forever home in a trench 8 inches deep. As the plants grow taller throughout the season, gradually fill in the trench with soil and compost.

4. The Harvest Rule: Patience is key! Do not harvest any spears during the first two years. This allows the energy to go back into the roots. By the third year, you can begin a lifelong harvest of the best asparagus you've ever tasted.

5. Pests and Diseases: Because asparagus stays in the same spot for decades, keeping the bed clean and monitoring for specific beetles is essential for longevity. Watch for these common issues:

• The Main Culprit: The Asparagus Beetle is the primary pest; they are small, colorful beetles that chew on the spears and lay tiny black eggs that look like "fringe" on the foliage.
• The Defense: Hand-picking is very effective. In the fall, be sure to cut back and remove all old "ferns" after they turn brown to prevent the beetles from over-wintering in the debris.
• The "Crown Rot" Rule: To avoid fungal issues like Fusarium Wilt, ensure your asparagus trench has excellent drainage. Asparagus needs moisture, but the crowns will rot if they sit in standing water.
• Harvesting for Production: Once you reach the third year, harvest spears when they are 6-8 inches tall. Stop harvesting by early summer to let the plants grow into tall "ferns"—this allows the plant to recharge its energy for next year's crop!
